Hit and Run
I hit a parked car today...yeah, pretty much. I was backing out of a space at the Kirkland Guitar Center, which has a terrible parking lot, and then I barely rubbed up to the corner of another car. The car was like half out of their slot. If they were parked right, I would have had no problem. But they weren't and before I knew it, I was backed into the corner of their car. The car was pretty beat up and like 20 years old and rusting. I couldn't really tell if I even marked up the car since it was in pretty bad shape. So I was in a situation of charactor building. I was in a hurry to get back to the office for a meeting. Should I stay? Should I look for the owner? It looked like a starving musician's car so I was pretty sure they were in Guitar Center. Do I leave a note? Do I just take off? They would probably never know.
I decided to leave a note on their car with my phone #. They called a couple hours later. I was so nervous when I didn't recognize the # calling me. The last thing I need is for someone to try to get more $ out of me than their car is worth. I imagined it being a pain bringing it to different body shops and getting quotes. All the time...all the money. Well, when I answered, the dude just said that he couldn't see any damage so don't worry about it. Man what a relief!
Have you had a similar situation? What would you have done in mine?

I've had tons of similar situations. In fact, sometimes purposefully—bumping is a part of parking—especially in Minnesota. But that's why God created bumpers
Its great when both parties "do the right thing" -- that guy could have blamed you for the rust on his car and tried to get a new paint job from your insurance company. I think this is what we all fear -- but you and he did right. Right on.
I would have done the same thing that you did. It is tough doing the right thing and we don't always get rewarded for it. Great job!
I too would have done the same thing, however tempting it would be not to. I am glad to hear that the other person also did right. If he had not, how would you react differently, if at all?
So I was planning on leaving you a comment and then I saw that I HAD to because you posted this at 1234 AM!!!!! Good job, thats the best time everrrr.
Ok, so reading this reminded me that I did a similar thing the other day! Ah.
I was parallel parked and was backing up so that I could get out and I lightly, very lightly tapped the person's car behind me. I really didn't have a clue what to do and I assumed that nothing really happened and I left. And I completely forgot about it until now. Weird.. So, for me...I guess I hit and run...but it was really a hit. Haha. =]
